Backdating - Council Tax Benefit

Chiltern District Council - Revenues and Benefits

A claimant may be eligible for their claim to be backdated if there is a valid reason why they were unable to apply for their council tax benefit or housing benefit earlier.

In order for a backdate of Housing Benefit to be allowed you will have to show 'good cause' as to why you did not apply earlier and that good cause existed continuously during the period for which dackdating is requested.

Each case will be decided according to its own individual situation. Examples of 'good cause' are prolonged illness or bereavement.

Please provide as much information and evidence as you can to support your claim. The maximum period that a benefit claim can be backdated is 52 weeks from the date we receive the backdate request.
