In order to vote in elections your name must be included in the Register of Electors. If you are unsure if you are included in the Register it is a simple matter to check.

If you are not registered, you may do so at any time. During the period January to September the Register is updated each month by a process known as 'Rolling Registration' and in the October-December period a complete new register is prepared following a household canvass in which everyone is reminded of their legal obligation to register.
Who is eligible for inclusion in the register?
Any person resident in the UK who is aged 18 or over (or who will become 18 over the next year or so) and who is British, Irish or a British Commonwealth citizen. European Union citizens are resident in the UK must also register, though their voting rights are restricted to local government elections and (by their own choice) European Parliamentary elections.
Why should I register?
If your name is not included in the register you will be unable to vote in elections. By voting you are expressing your choice about your elected representatives for local, national and European government. Registration does not commit you to vote, but if you do not register the choice of whether to vote or not is taken from you. In any event, the Representation of the People Act requires all eligible persons to register.
If your name is not included in the register of Electors you may be refused an application for credit as, under law, credit reference agencies use the register to check the bona fides of those applying for financial services.
